What is behaviour-based safety?

game of puzzle

Behavioural-based security (BBS), which is a method for safety improvement that applies behaviour change science to real-world challenges, is known as behavior-based safety. This creates safety partnerships between management and employees by focusing attention on everyday safety behavior. The goal is to make work safer.

Safety based on behaviour

Behaviour Based Safety, or BBS, encourages people to be more safe at work. The process involves collecting safety behaviour data, redesigning work procedures and introducing and implementing safer work practices. The system is then evaluated to make sure it works. Behaviour-Based Safety is a dynamic process and changes over time as more is learned. The initial model might not be working after several weeks. Moreover, BBS programs are complex and require consideration of a change management process, training, and other variables.

A great safety program should be inclusive of a variety topics and activities. It should also encourage employees to take ownership of their safety. In many cases, an employee's actions lead to injuries or incidents. Employees can be injured or even killed by their actions. A good safety program must address both high risk and low risk behaviors.

Safety culture that is behaviour-based

Using a behaviour-based safety culture to improve safety performance can improve a number of important metrics. It can reduce accidents and reduce the likelihood of incidents. Reluctant to change makes it difficult to implement such an approach. However, investing in a behaviour-based safety culture will help people respond in the right way in critical situations. This can provide long-term benefits for the company.

Safety-based cultures that encourage behaviour change should include clear policies. These policies should outline the company's approach towards safety and provide a roadmap for improvement. All employees should be trained in safety.

Measuring safety based on behaviour

A Behaviour-based system of measure measures safety performance in the workplace. This measurement system identifies the most dangerous workplace behaviours and then uses these data to create an effective prevention and control plan. It provides a solid business case that supports solutions to workplace accidents and injuries.

Behavioral safety observation are typically done daily, weekly, and monthly. They should keep track of both risky and good behaviours, and highlight areas that need improvement.

Benefits from a BBS programme

BBS programs can be a great way to improve safety culture at work. Employees may use the program to hold each other responsible for unsafe actions. BBS can help prevent accidents as well as improve your employees' overall health. It can also help prevent illnesses and injuries caused by exposure to hazardous substances.

You must set clear goals to make your program successful. Some goals might include reducing the number near-misses that occur each year or increasing the proportion of employees who use proper PPE. Also, you should set goals that are both achievable and manageable to discourage employees. Also, you should have a clear plan to implement the program.

FAQ

How does a manager motivate his/her employees?

Motivation refers to the desire or need to succeed.

You can get motivated by doing something enjoyable.

Another way to get motivated is to see yourself as a contributor to the success of the company.

For example, if your goal is to become a physician, you will probably find it more motivational to see patients rather than to read a lot of medicine books.

The inner motivation is another type.

You might feel a strong sense for responsibility and want to help others.

You may even find it enjoyable to work hard.

If you don't feel motivated, ask yourself why.

Then think about how you can make your life more motivating.

How can a manager enhance his/her leadership skills?

By practicing good management skills at all times.

Managers should monitor the performance and progress of their subordinates.

You should immediately take action if you see that your subordinate is not performing as well as you would like.

You should be able pinpoint what needs to improve and how to fix it.

Why is Six Sigma so popular?

Six Sigma is simple to implement and can yield significant results. It can also be used to help companies identify and focus on the most important aspects of their business.

What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean Manufacturing methods are used to reduce waste through structured processes. They were developed in Japan by Toyota Motor Corporation (in the 1980s). The main goal was to produce products at lower costs while maintaining quality. Lean manufacturing is about eliminating redundant steps and activities from the manufacturing process. It consists of five basic elements: pull systems, continuous improvement, just-in-time, kaizen (continuous change), and 5S. The production of only what the customer needs without extra work is called pull systems. Continuous improvement means continuously improving on existing processes. Just-intime refers the time components and materials arrive at the exact place where they are needed. Kaizen is continuous improvement. This can be achieved by making small, incremental changes every day. Finally, 5S stands for sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain. These five elements can be combined to achieve the best possible results.

Lean Production System

The lean production system is based on six key concepts:

  • Flow: The goal is to move material and information as close as possible from customers.
  • Value stream mapping - Break down each stage in a process into distinct tasks and create an overview of the whole process.
  • Five S's – Sort, Put In Order Shine, Standardize and Sustain
  • Kanban – visual signals like colored tape, stickers or other visual cues are used to keep track inventory.
  • Theory of constraints: Identify bottlenecks and use lean tools such as kanban boards to eliminate them.
  • Just-in-time delivery - Deliver components and materials right to your point of use.
  • Continuous improvement is making incremental improvements to your process, rather than trying to overhaul it all at once.
